The Astable or free-running Multivibrator is a closed loop regenerative feedback circuit. Which has two states, both of which are quasi and stable. Without the aid of an external triggering signal, it switches back and forth from one stable state to the other, remaining in each for a time dependent upon the discharging of a capacitive circuit. Thus, the Astable circuit is an oscillator and is used as a generator of “square waves”.

a Common Collector Transistor Amplifier. Since the collector resistance is made to zero, the collector is at ac ground that is why the circuit is also called as a grounded collector amplifier or this configuration is having voltage gain close to unity and hence a change in base voltage appears  a an equal change across the load at the emitter hence the name Emitter Follower. In other words the emitter follows the input signal.

the gating waveform at t = 0, transistor Q1 is in saturation. The voltage across the capacitor C and at the base of Q2 is Vce (sat). The quiescent output voltage at the emitter of Q2 is lower than the base voltage by Vbe2 and hence with respect to ground is at Vce (sat) Vbe2, as indicated in fig. If we neglect this small voltage (a few tenths of a volt negative) as well as the small diode drop, then the voltage across C1 and also across R is Vcc. Hence the current iR is Vcc/R. Since the quiescent output voltage is close to zero, then the emitter current for Q2 for  t < 0 is Vee/Re and the base current of Q2 is iB2 ~ Vee/Re.hFE. Since iB2 is usually small in comparison with ic1.

The Monostable Multivibrator which is also known as a univibrator or one shot multivibrator can be used to generate a gating pulse whose width can be controlled. In the monostable configuration, a trigger signal is required to induce a transition from the stable state to the quasi-stable state. The circuit may remain in its quasi-stable state for a time which is very long in comparison with the time of transition between states. After a certain interval of time, the circuit returns to the original stable state by itself.
